Sweet sensation: Newborn royal cheetahs in TokyoThere's something to celebrate at Tama Zoo in Tokyo! Six cheetahs were born in January. But that's not all: two of the balls of wool are part of the rare variant of the king cheetah, in which the black spots appear in a blob form and create a stripe-like pattern. They already have a best friend.
Operators and visitors to the zoo are blown away: a total of six cheetahs, including two specimens of the rare Konigsgeparden species! A birth of this rare variety is only possible if both mother and father carry a recessive gene, which causes the black spots typical of these big cats to change into an apparent stripe pattern via a blob form. The event becomes all the more important if one realizes that until today only six such specimens have been observed in the wild.
