Bring kitten and adult cat together: tips

The idea is obvious: Bringing a kitten together with a cat - a plan that would have to succeed quite easily. After all, the little velvet paw should enjoy a kind of puppy protection, similar to dogs. However, as experience shows, it is not quite that simple. These tips tell you what to watch out for. Of course there is something about it: the connection between cat and kitten or mother and child is something completely natural and therefore special. But nature is not squeamish: As a rule, a cat mother only keeps the little ones with it until they can take care of themselves. In this respect, it is not even said with your own mom that the little new house tiger and the older cat get along well. If you want to bring young and old together, the following advice could be useful for you.

Planning ahead when combining characters

The character of your cat and that of the young newcomer are decisive factors when it comes to future coexistence. If your previous velvet paw is rather reserved and shy, the young animal shouldn't be a fuss either. If your usual roommate is more dominant, the newcomer can be a real cheeky cheek. If the kitten is a male who has just reached sexual maturity, your cat will hardly respond to its advances. In the case of older problem cats, a newcomer is around three months old. He is in a natural learning phase until he is about one year old. Your previous cat will hardly have any difficulty blowing the newcomer's march if necessary.

Kitten or adult cat? Pro and con

You want to adopt a cat and face the decision whether it is a kitten or a ...

The First meeting

If the kitten arrives in its new environment, it must be able to feel safe. To achieve this, a portable cat cage is available for the further course. Ideally, place it in a room that your previous cat rarely uses. The kitten should be able to eat in it, and a place of retreat within the cage, such as a box or a basket, cannot hurt either. Place your favorite cat's favorite food outside the cage, preferably in a place where it can eat undisturbed.

With the room door open and the cage closed, contact future residents. Your ancestral roommate should have the opportunity to meet the kitten without disturbance or interruption. Conversely, the Mini can retreat to its basket if it becomes too much for it. Pay attention to your old cat as usual and keep the previous procedures to show that the newcomer does not mean a loss of familiar harmony.

The further approach

As soon as the kitten and your cat appear calm and balanced when they are in one room under the conditions mentioned, you can start moving the cage to other rooms. Increase the rooms according to the importance that the respective area has for your previous velvet paw. Depending on the case and progress, it can take a few weeks before you reach the room where your cat usually feels most comfortable. Even a much quicker approach is not uncommon.

First direct contact and then

When you open the cage for the first time and allow the two animals to meet and get to know each other personally, this should be done under close observation. Make sure that it does not become too rabid in the course of the acquaintance. In the following period, it may be advisable to separate the two cats if they do not have the opportunity to control them. You should only resolve this procedure once the relationship between the two has been firmly established.

In the long run, the two cats should each have their own things that they need in everyday life. These include a place to sleep, a water bowl or a food bowl as well as your own litter box. Position them in separate places and create your own private areas in which the kitten and cat can retreat to relax.
